The Navy is a visible symbol of U.S. power around the globe. A carrier group can operate against an enemy without the need to gain the consent of neighboring countries for airbases or troop staging areas. The Navy keeps our sealanes open and ensures control of the oceans.

General Information

Origin: The Navy was founded on October 13, 1775, and the Department of the Navy was established on April 30, 1798.
Organization: The Department of the Navy has three principal components: The Navy Department, consisting of executive offices mostly in Washington, D.C.; the operating forces, including the Marine Corps, the reserve components, and, in time of war, the U.S. Coast Guard (in peace, a component of the Department of Transportation); and the shore establishment.
Management: The Secretary of the Navy, currently Gordon R. Englande, is responsible for, and has the authority under Title 10 of the United States Code, to conduct all the affairs of the Department of the Navy.
Navy Operations: The Chief of Naval Operations, currently Admiral Vern Clark, is the senior military officer in the Navy. He is a four-star admiral and is responsible to the Secretary of the Navy for the operating forces of the Navy and the Navy shore activities assigned by the Secretary.
Marine Corps: The Second Continental Congress resolved in 1775 to raise two battalions of Continental Marines. Since then the Marine Corps has evolved into a fighting force of air, ground and sea power. General James L. Jones is the Commandant of the Marine Corps.
Coast Guard: Normally a part of the Department of Transportation, the Coast Guard is adept at operating in shallow or deep water and in mounting rescue operations under harsh conditions. Admiral James M. Loy is the Commandant of the Coast Guard.
