Carlie's Body Found Near Church
SARASOTA - Beyond a chain-link fence, in woods behind a church, investigators early Friday found the body of 11-year-old Carlie Brucia, ending a five-day search that captivated the nation.
Hours later, officials charged Joseph P. Smith, 37, an auto mechanic and habitual drug offender, with first-degree murder and kidnapping. They vowed to seek the death penalty.

Gag Order Sought In Abduction Case
SARASOTA - Joseph P. Smith's defense attorney filed a motion Monday seeking a gag order in the Carlie Brucia murder case.
In a court filing, public defender Adam Tebrugge said the case has ``attracted unprecedented worldwide and local media coverage,'' and releasing more information will make a fair trial impossible.

Troubled Life Had Divorces, Drug Use
SARASOTA - Joseph P. Smith was heavily in debt, addicted to drugs and unable to hold a job.
A convicted felon with more than a dozen arrests, he was separated from his wife and three young children when deputies arrested him Tuesday on a probation violation charge.
