Lafave, of Riverview, was arrested on June 21 and charged with committing lewd or lascivious battery on a person under age 16. Lafave was a reading teacher at Greco Middle School.

The Victim: 14-year-old student
According to police records, Lafave performed oral sex on a 14-year-old boy on June 3 at a location withheld by police. Then on June 14, Lafave had sexual intercourse with the boy in a portable classroom at Greco Middle School, reports said.

The Husband: Owen Lafave
Lafave, a commercial banker, said he learned about the allegations against his wife from his mother-in-law, who called him at work to tell of her daughter's arrest. Owen Lafave said the couple tried to make the marriage work but the scandal took its toll and they divorced.

Defense Lawyer: John Fitzgibbons
Fitzgibbons, a Tampa attorney. "Debbie has some profound emotional issues that are not her fault," he said after the preliminary hearing. "I think that once anyone reads what the doctors have to say, they will understand a lot more about what went on."
